KIN

Rooted in dancer and musician Erin Fowler’s explorations of her Irish ancestry, KIN is an intimate and elemental work-in-progress performance exploring ancestral dislocation and grief, Australian cultural in-betweenness, the White Cultural Void, and the yearning to belong.

Brought to life by the powerful three-part harmonies of Erin, Tess Fowler and Jessica Bigg, KIN searches for a meaningful inheritance beyond footy, snags & “Aussie larrikins.” It gives presence to the weight of colonial history and shame, and the quiet rituals carried through women’s bodies.

Part music gig, part ritual, part dance work, KIN weaves traditional, contemporary, and original music, together with embodied movement into a rich, evocative tapestry. Audiences are gently invited into shared song, echoing the rise of community choirs and sea shanty pub singing that reflect our collective longing for connection.

"The three-part harmonies of Erin Fowler, Tess Fowler and Jessica Bigg are solid, haunting and deeply affecting. Their voices seem to hold both personal grief and something more collective. The embodied movement language is evocative and restrained and the personal storytelling is genuinely engaging. As a work-in-progress, KIN already possesses a clear tonal world... an evocative performance language, a compelling personal frame, and a sincere engagement with difficult cultural and historical material. KIN is a thoughtful and moving offering, intimate in scale, but expansive in the questions it asks. It leaves a lingering impression.

- Kate Gaul, Disrupting Stages

“Fowler has put together a group of exceptional performers that welcomed the audience into their families’ stories. A first-rate ensemble production. It was such a joy to listen to some amazingly emotive songs, sung by some truly talented individuals."
